Now this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, in the holiness and sincerity that are from God. We have done so not according to worldly wisdom but according to God’s grace. — 2 Corinthians 1:12
People certainly do not expect holiness and sincerity these days. Long experience has prepared them for sarcasm and hostility. If we operate according to worldly wisdom — which prompts us to “look out for Number One” — no one will be surprised. Most likely, no one will even notice.
Imagine co-workers’ surprise when, instead of becoming defensive, someone confesses a mistake and apologizes sincerely. Imagine a family member’s surprise when they’re listened to with respect and sympathy rather than ridicule and impatience.
Now imagine the world’s surprise when all Christians behave this way!
Jesus modeled patience, kindness, sincerity, holiness, and great listening skills. Isn’t that what we should be modeling? And, best of all, wouldn’t that make everywhere we go a holy place?
